National Women’s History Month

The month of March is National Women’s History Month. I am embarrassed to say I didn’t realize March held this special significance for women. and in my research to educate myself, I found across this quote:

Each time a girl opens a book and reads a womanless history, she learns she is worth less. ~ Myra Pollack Sadker

As the mother of two daughters – this hit home and I wanted to learn more on the author. I googled Myra Pollack Sadker and discovered this fascinating woman and how she became the voice against sexism for future young women in the classroom and careers.

Dr. Myra Pollack Sadler

Dr. Myra Pollack Sadker (1943-1995) uncovered this bias in her career as an adult and she lived it. From a humble background in Augusta, Maine a college scholarship she earned was instead given to a young man. A professor explained this decisionMyra4 to Myra as “this young man will have to support a family one day.” The fact that this young man came from a more affluent background than Myra was not a factor. She continued to face this bias throughout her academic career. Her male co-authors on various paper were always given top listing. In staff meetings, her voice was never given the same respect as her male co-workers. Myra traced this “voicelessness” of professional woman to the early years of their education and decided do something by being the voice for future generations.

Groundbreaking Research and National Exposure

Myra pioneered much of the research documenting gender bias in America’s schools. From grade school through graduate school, from inner city to rural towns, she uncovered not only blatant gender discrimination in textbooks and sports funding, but also subtle patterns of inequities that shaped the lives of girls and boys. Myra took this research and wrote a groundbreaking book in 1973, Sexism in School and Society, the first of its kind for teachers. She continued to spread the awareness on this issue through her lectures and publications. She alerted society to how girls from a very young age were being cheated and the career costs of sexism. She gained a national audience by appearing on various television shows from “Opera” to the “Today Show” helping to educate parents and teachers on how to combat this sexism. Her foundation continues her work today. The Myra Sadker Foundation continues this research by supporting efforts dedicated to liberating the possibilities that exist in the minds and hearts of young girls.

In honor of Women’s History month, I honor and thank Dr. Sadker. Girls today still have many unequal battles to fight but the conversation is easier due to the pioneering research of Dr. Sadker. Streamline your Office with the Latest Gadgets and Technology Trends

tech at your deskThe concept of co-working and shared office space is not the only revolution of the traditional office. Technology has changed the face of the office for years. For example, the computer completely reorganized every office and the smart phone is now a must have for everyone who works. As frustrating as technology can be sometimes when it does not work properly, the right technology can help with increased efficiently, manage expenses and improve performance. According to SMB Group’s 2015 SMB Routes to Market Study (PDF), 29 percent of all small businesses view technology as helping them to improve outcomes significantly. Here are some highlighted options to streamline your office with the latest gadgets and technology trends.
Mobile Technology
Mobile applications have made great strides in the last few years and quickly became indispensable to businesses of all sizes. The statistics on mobile traffic to main websites continues to grow and if your business does not have a mobile friendly website, you will be left in the dark. In addition, collecting payments for your business via mobile devices is cost friendly and convenient.

Cloud Based Software
Business are getting away from the use of on-premises software and hardware and heading toward the cloud. Cloud-based solutions offer greater scalability, security, efficiency, and flexibility regarding access than their on premise counterparts. For more information on making this move in 2017, read this article “Thinking About Migrating Your Business to the Cloud? Consider This Checklist First”
Gadgets for the Desk
For those of us that spend a lot of time working from a desk why not make it as painless as possible with the latest tech gadgets? Here is a list of gadgets that will add a little more pleasure and/or utility to your typical office space.

  • External Hard Drive – If you have anything of value on your computer, you need to back it up. A hefty external hard drive will help you prepare for the worse. There many options out there so finding one in your price range and specs for your needs will be easy.
  • Mobile Device Stand – If you want to use your phone or tablet as a second screen at your desk, be it to stream video or obsessively watch for notifications, a sturdy little stand will make life easier.
  • Mechanical Keyboard – For those of use that type fast a typical keyboard sometimes just won’t’ cut it. We appreciate the faster, “clickier” feel of a good mechanical keyboard. Finding one that makes your time at a computer more enjoyable will be a good investment.
  • Space Heater – While not explicitly for your desk, a space heater can help your home office (or any office) stay nice and toasty when the weather takes a turn for the chilly. With your own little heater, you will not warm up co-workers.

Why the Holidays are Important to Work Webb

xmas-stockingsI love Christmas. If you know me at all, you know how much I love Christmas. But what you may not know is WHY I love this holiday so much. I decided to make a list which was much harder than it sounds. It’s more than seeing the big red suited dude, buying presents and, stressing over getting the Christmas cards out in time. It is a very personal time that I look forward to every year. Here is why.

Family.
Christmas means time with family both family-family and friends that have turned into family over the years. It also means my immediate family will be together. My daughter will be home from college for a few days and my other children will be out of school for two weeks. There are also yearly events that I partake in with my framily. Providing a Christmas for foster kids with Children’s Home Society, baking cookies, and an annual Christmas Eve soup competition are a few of the traditional events I look forward to this time of year.

Cooking.
You may not know this, but I am a fabulous cook. No really. I am good. Christmas is a great time for me to get in the kitchen and put together another traditional meal for those I love. In addition, there are items that I only make this time of year —Reindeer Chow anyone? I must hide some to make sure I have them for Christmas otherwise my family would eat everything before the 25th.

Decorations.penguin-xmas
I love to decorate for the holidays. If you follow me on social media, you will know I have a love of inflatable decor, Penguins in particular. I’m calling it #Penguinfest2016 this year if you want to join in.  They make me smile when I drive up to the house. And then there’s the dark side of my décor —the saga of the Webb Christmas tree battle of the past three years. This battle is not nearly an entertaining to me and my family as it is to my social media followers but at the end of the day NOTHING breaks my Christmas spirit.

Reflection.
Last but not least, Christmas starts off the time of the year where I personally take an inventory of life. I remember who is here and who is missing. I see how much my children have grown and matured over the years and feel tremendous pride. I reflect on another Christmas with my husband of over 20 years and laugh at how far we have come since those first few years. In short, I count the things in my life I value the most and this brings me Joy.

Christmas is priceless time for me, for you it may be Chanukah, Kwanzaa or maybe Festivus but whatever it is I hope it brings you joy, and remember Work Happy!

What’s Happening this Holiday Season

xamsThe holidays are here and it’s one of my favorite times of the year. If you have seen my home, you know I  love blow up decorations. I love them because they make me happy. What also makes me happy is seeing children enjoying holiday festivities. Downtown Daytona Beach has put together a holiday schedule that the child in everyone will enjoy.

One event that is happening right outside of Work Webb’s door is live performances at Storybook Park. The Volusia County Cultural Alliance (VCCA) is sponsoring these performances and each week a local theater, dance, and musical groups will present a sample of their Christmas program live on stage in Riverfront Park. A full listing of the performances can be seen here http://www.riverfrontshopsofdaytona.com

A holiday tradition continues this Saturday, December 10th with the Daytona Beach Christmas Boat Parade presented by the Halifax River Yacht Club.  This year the Halifax River Yacht Club has partnered with Light the Way, a local community network that supports individual needs of cancer patients in treatment in Volusia County. This event gives attendees and participants in the parade a great opportunity to join the giving season and help local cancer patients.
For more information on the boat parade and the Light the Way network, visit here http://www.hryc.com/Christmas-Boat-Parade-registration.aspx

Support local small business and your community by attending these great events in Downtown Daytona Beach. While you are enjoying these special holiday festivities, artists and vendors will show their wares, including pottery, glass, home décor, jewelry, holiday items, crafts, original art, and more. A complete list of vendors can be found here http://www.riverfrontshopsofdaytona.com/

Enjoy holiday, shop local and have a great weekend.

Why I Walk

I walk for Ruthie. Ruthie was my Mom. But she became Ruthie once she forgot she was Mom. I often said to people who thought it very tragic that my Mom couldn’t remember me anymore that I happily traded my Mom knowing me for my Mom no longer knowing she had Alzheimer’s Disease. The day she quietly slipped from the horror of moments of lucidity knowing what she was losing to that place where it was just all gone. I read a quote recently from #SethRogen “I think until you see it [Alzheimer’s] first hand, it’s kind of hard to conceive how brutal it is.” It was one of the more poignant things I ever read. So on point. Alzheimer’s is painful to watch.

Why You Should Walk – to Find a Cure

Please make a donation to help the Alzheimer’s Association advance research into methods of treatment, prevention and, ultimately, a cure for Alzheimer’s. This walk to end Alzheimer’s supports the individuals and the families of those individuals. All donations are appreciated. Make your donation here: Donate
Thank you for joining me! The end of Alzheimer’s disease starts with you. #ENDALZ

Mini-Series: Creating a Career that Fits Your Lifestyle, Not the Other Way Around Part I

Creating a Career That Fits Your Lifestyle:

No one knows better than me how easy it is to get caught up in the craziness of everyday work life (you know those schedules/reports/client expectations) and forget exactly what we are working so hard for. Suddenly the destination is controlling the ride and we just don’t know what to do.  But, we know it’s not working.  Even if you love your job, your health and for that matter your sanity REQUIRE that you understand your need to balance work time with personal time. Your career, no matter how enjoyable, is there to support your lifestyle, not the other way around. If you find yourself making constant sacrifices in your personal life in favor of your work schedule, it’s time to take the reins and reevaluate the situation and make some hard (or maybe not-so-hard) choices.

Are you in? Because I have a project for us.

Dreams Road Sign with dramatic clouds and sky.

PART I:  Dreamcasting

The first step in creating a career that fits your lifestyle is Dreamcasting. It sounds much fancier than it is.  This process requires you to sit down and “map out” your dreams for the future. What are you trying to achieve outside of work? The answer can be as simple as a debt-free existence, or as complex as traveling the world to volunteer your time improving education and healthcare access in developing nations. No matter what career you currently have, the opportunity exists to meet these personal life goals. Visualizing these goals with a “Dream Journal” is Step 1.  It can take it’s form in many ways…. an actual Journal with clippings, photos and thoughts attached, a private Pinterest Board, or a Vision Board [my friend Katie & I started ours over a pile of magazines and a bottle of wine].  Whatever medium you choose it’s a process that makes your “dreams” more tangible and with that, you are more likely to achieve them.

If you’re in this with me, let’s do this over the month of July and on August 5th I will share my Vision Board and if anyone wants me to share theirs or their Pinterest Board, I will share them too.  In August we will talk about Step 2:  Refocusing.

I don’t know about you but I’m pretty excited…
